Originally established as a special conference of the Pennsylvania Ministerium in 1812, the Joint Synod petitioned the ministerium to form an independent body in 1817, and in 1818 the first general conference of the synod was held in Somerset, Ohio. The American Lutheran Church (1961-1987) was formed by the merger of the American Lutheran Church (1930-1960), the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the United Evangelical Lutheran Church.
